John Gilmore 10/19 Wear Blue

I’m absolutely blown away to have been selected for Spotlight Member of the month!  I’m not much of a spotlight guy!  But I am proud to belong to such a great gym!  Sports and athletics has always been part of my life.  I grew up in a small town in Western Kansas, and playing sports was pretty much all there was to do.  Eventually by high school I had figured out that God gave me a talent to run really fast for short distances.  So I went to college on a Track and Field scholarship as a sprinter.  I also discovered the Army ROTC program in college, so between track and ROTC, I had no choice but to stay in good shape.  I commissioned as an Army Medical Service Corps Officer and did a good job of keeping in shape.  At least good enough to pass the PT test every 6 months!   When Uncle Sam released me, I didn’t quite look like I did when I was a Second Lieutenant, but I was keeping my front porch in check.  However, when the requirement of no longer being in shape was no longer a requirement, the front porch kept getting bigger and bigger until eventually I was no longer in shape, unless you consider round a shape.  I had of course heard of CrossFit.  Who hasn’t?  My old boss used to talk about it and tell me about his workouts which all sounded terrible.  When we moved to Bulverde in 2015, I couldn’t help but notice the Iron Antler/ aMAZEn BootCamp that was literally a 5 minute drive from my house.  After several months of driving by that gym, and wondering if I should join, I finally got up the guts to do it.  It had been 3 years since I had worked out.  Nine months later I’m still here.  I’ve lost about 20 pounds, and I’m in the best shape I’ve been in in a long time!  Every workout is a challenge.  My shirt is completely soaked after every workout.  There are no easy days, only gut wrenching and slightly less gut wrenching.  But it is getting easier.  Kind of.  I’ve met so many great people/workout partners.  The coaches are all unbelievable people.  Every one of them push me past my limits!   I’m so grateful that there is a place like Iron Antler.
